1917
$1 McKinley
Mintage: 5,000
Designer: Obverse - Charles E. Barber, Reverse
- George T. Morgan
This
souvenir gold dollar was also minted to help defray costs of construction
of the McKinley Birthplace Memorial. During February 1917, 10,000
gold dollars were struck from the new 1917 dies. Despite this
record of actual mintage and distribution, the 1917 coin is a
little harder to find than the 1916 coin. Proof like specimens
exist. George T. Morgan, Assistant Engraver of the United States
Mint was the designer of the reverse with Charles E. Barber being
the designer of the obverse. McKinley was portrayed on money only
because he had been killed in office. The official sale price
was $3.00.
